The Members

MI on Bass
MI started off with the guitar when he was about 14 but started dabbling with the bass when none of his mates would do so. He started performing regularly at weddings and bars sometime in 2001, playing bass for “Gravy Train”, a 3-piece cover band. The Gravy Train landed gigs at various spots including Paul’s Place (when it was still in Damansara), Backyard, Bulldog, Holiday Villa Subang, Palace of the Golden Horses and Sheraton Subang.

MI's influences come from a variety of sources – rock, pop, jazz, metal. To him, Paul McCartney's base lines are magical and he lists as his heroes - John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, John Taylor of Duran Duran, John Deacon of Queen, Paul Chambers (who was John Coltrane’s bassist), Andy Peterson and Kelly, both local superstar sessionists.

MI went without a proper bass for a number of years. It was only after he started working that he acquired his first bass from a good buddy for RM200, an old mid-70’s Hondo II Japanese Gibson SG copy with maple fingerboard and P style pickups. He soon switched to an entry level Fender Jazz and later an American Standard Precision Bass. Through the years he had used several other basses including an Alembic Epic and a Godin A4. His current stable of basses include:
· ‘04 Warwick Katana NT
· ‘76 Fender Jazz
· ‘04 Fender Deluxe Precision
· ‘02 Yamaha TRB 1005 fretless

He is often seen playing the bass with a cigarette sticking out of his mouth.

MH on Lead Guitar & Vocals
MH picked up the guitar in his 20s (he doesn't look it but it was some time ago) and owns 5 guitars to date. According to him, variety is key (like women or cars), because each one has a different personality ;-)

He has 2 Yamaha electric guitars and likes Japanese guitars for their reliability and great playability. He also has an electric Ibanez and a Fender in his collection, every aspiring guitarist's dream guitar. MH plays a Morris acoustic guitar at some gigs.

MH lists Prince, Santana and Marvin Gaye as his influences and enjoys jazz, rock, soul and funk, in no particular order. In 2003, he performed with MI for the first time at a function in the Selangor Club. Two years later, he joined MI and CC for a charity event in Souled Out and has been a key member of the band since.

GL on Vocals & Guitar
GL has been involved in music from an early age through various performing groups and enjoys singing on stage.

In the past few years, he
started performing for friends and love ones at weddings and functions. That was how he got into singing with MI and MH, who incidentally, were his friends from the same line of work. They met regularly on the workfront but never knew they shared the same passion for music until he finally joined the band. They had their first gig together in August 2006 at Bar Savanh, Heritage Row.

GL lists various genres as his favourites, from pop to rock to old jazz standards. He is the band's resident crooner ala 'Buble'.

CC on Drums
CC first picked up the drums when he was in college. He likes 70s classics and 90s alternative and favourite drummers include Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Keith Moon (The Who), Dave Ghrol (Nirvana), Copeland (Police), Chamberland (Smashing Pumpkins) and Brad Wilk (Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave). He enjoys music from bands mentioned above, as well as bands and artistes like Deep Purple, Rolling Stones, Beatles, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Black Crowes.

CC
started his own unnamed band in the 90s and played for the Wicked Somethings, which got into the Battle of the Bands semifinals in 2000. A year later, he started playing with MI in Gravy Train and they have been jamming together eversince.

With the band, he plays a Tama Rockstar drumset. At home, he plays his trusty, old Superstar, bought 10 years ago.

WN on Keyboard,Vocals
& Saxophone

Music is WN's first love and she has been playing the piano since she was 5 years old. After graduation and finding herself a 'real job' in advertising, she got part-time gigs playing the piano on weekends at The Regent Hotel lounge and the Parkroyal Grill. Guests liked her music and the Grill kept renewing her quarterly contract. She became their resident pianist for over 3 years.

She finally got tired of working 7 days a week, and decided to pursue other things. She now sings with her acapella group, Fancy Poultry, and continues to play the piano at private functions on an ad hoc basis, mostly for The Carat Club, Bangsar.

WN also picked up the saxophone as soon as she could afford one in 2001. She had always wanted to learn it, inspired by Lisa Simpson of The Simpsons. Still a beginner at the horn, she wishes she has more time to practice and hone her skills.

She became the newest member of the band since October 2006, after singing with them at a friend's wedding. She plays a Yamaha keyboard, though nothing beats the feel and timbre of a baby grand, in her humble opinion ;-)
